Minimum Consumable Cutting (MCC) Indicator: An indicator to measure cutting material savings and cutting tool strength

Background Story of Minimum Consumable Cutting (MCC) Indicator:

Inflation, labor shortage, supply chain disruptions…. In the last few years, everything seems to have come to a halt for manufacturers. The supply chain and manufacturing process that we thought we could control with precision were all in chaos.

In recent years, countries around the world have paid more and more attention to environmental friendliness. Many countries have begun to plan how to achieve carbon neutrality and carbon peaking in the future, and will soon introduce carbon tariffs. Many companies have also begun to follow the pace of government policies to gradually reduce unnecessary waste.

Electric vehicles play an extremely important role in environment-friendly development. The metal required for electric vehicle manufacturing far exceeds that of previous internal combustion engine vehicles, using 23kg of copper per internal combustion engine vehicle, 60kg per hybrid vehicle, and nearly 83kg per pure electric vehicle, more than triple the amount used. The use of aluminum in the manufacture of each electric vehicle even reaches 200kg.

In addition to facing instability from the external supply side, machine processors also need to compete internally with other manufacturers for limited materials.

As manufacturers, how do we face the above issues?

We believe that “to reduce carbon, first reduce the amount” is the best way to start reducing waste!

If we can reduce material waste, we can reduce carbon emissions and damage to the environment.

If we can reduce material waste, we can produce more consistently and reduce the impact of broken supply chains.

If we can reduce material waste, we have the opportunity to reduce the gap with inflation through continued growth.

How can we reduce material waste?

According to the European Commission: 80% of the product’s environmental impact is determined at the product design stage!

Change our way of designing product?

Convert cutting tools to indexable cutting tool designs!

Indexable cutting tools convert the cutting edge of the entire cutting tool into an independent cutting insert. In the process of machining, the friction between the cutting edge and the cutting material will generate high temperature, which leads to the damage of the cutting edge. Thanks to the design of indexable cutting tools, the cutting insert can be replaced directly, which reduces a large amount of material waste.

The invention of indexable cutting tools intends to save cutting materials used during the manufacturing process, so if we like to know whether one of the indexable cutting tools outperforms others, measuring the amount of cutting materials saved is a fair method.

In other words, when a portion of raw material is used in the manufacturing process and can only create one product, but your cutting tool design can manufacture five products, which is equivalent to saving four times of material waste, or furthermore it can manufacture ten products, that is an even higher level of design.

In order to make it easier for users to understand, we classify the design strength of indexable cutting tools according to cutting material savings, and named it “Minimum Consumable Cutting (MCC) Indicator”.

Hope to create stronger products which can have perform more output with a less amount of consumables used!

As following are four tiers of Minimum Consumable Cutting (MCC) Indicator:

微耗材切削指標

MCC Indicator Red Label: Use 50% current material to produce, the same raw material can be used nearly 2 times

MCC Indicator Yellow Label: Use 30% current material to produce, the same raw material can be used nearly 4 times

MCC Indicator Blue Label: Use 10% current material to produce, the same raw material can be used nearly 10 times

MCC Indicator Green Label: Use 5% current material to produce, the same raw material can be used nearly 20 times

We hope everyone in the industry can reduce unnecessary material waste in the future, devote resources to providing more value to customers, and do our best to be friendly to the environment.
